Earthquake Prep With James Roddey (Part 7)

It time I'm you know it's only within about the last twenty to twenty-five years or so that we even realized we had the potential for these great great earthquakes with the first generation in modern history. that actually understands the risks and consequences uh living through responding to and preparing for one of these great magnitude-9 earthquakes that's going to shake the whole Pacific Northwest. How well we prepare for and respond to this earthquake will literally define us as a people in the Pacific Northwest and that sounds kinda silly but think about New Orleans.

When you say the word Katrina that literally defines New Orleans and will define New Orleans for the next 100 years. and what happened in New Orleans is a harbinger is literally the same thing that could happen here.

Accept it will affect ten times more people think about how you felt when you saw the images coming out of haiti. After that magnitude seven earthquake literally flattened tens of thousands a building strapping hundreds of thousands of people think about even. How you felt when use all the BP oil spill in the Gulf. You thought and I thought how could they let this happen well we know in advance. We know right now that we've got the potential for one of these great earthquakes it sure seems like we need to one get prepared and help others understand that this is gonna happen of that.

Earthquake Prep With James Roddey (Part 6)

James Roddey -- the Earth Science Information Officer for the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries -- was the keynote speaker at Northwest SARCon 2010.  Roddey discusses how you can make your home safer in case of earthquake.

'Earthquake Preparedness,' Part 6 of 7 (Clackamas County Sheriff's Office)

I'm look inside your house what can you do. Inside your house that'll make it a safer place to be if the earthquake happens bolt bookshelves to the walls put little arm latches on your cabinets in your kitchen so that all the dishes. And pots and pans stay in the cabinets put a pair of shoes and a flashlight and maybe a few other essential items. Under your bed your house is just shaken for five minutes.
It's the middle of the night you you wake up you go through the shaking and you wanna go check on the dogs and cats and especially the kids but there's gonna be when does that have been broken. They're gonna be pictures that have fallen off the walls there's going to be glass and dishes everywhere soul trying to walk through that in a panic in the dark is gonna be really difficult.

So if you've got a pair shoes you slap him on para gloves. You put those on grab a flashlight you turn it on and you can go check in relative safety. if you got a big picture hanging above your bed that has glass in it it's probably a really good idea to either replace the glass with something like Lex an hour just plastic that's not gonna shatter or really really anchor the picture to the wall so it's not coming off the wall that.

I'm okey, are you ready for the big one ?. You start with a plan part of the plan is putting the emergency kit together you put the plan together. It's good for any type of disaster a catastrophe that you might become a victim up I mean if it snows an inch in Portland we're all stuck for days and days we're trapped we become victims.

But if you put the plan together if you put the kit together and and were talking about food and water and medicine and some sort of identification and putting all over your valuable papers mortgage insurance on a disk. On a little flash drive and keeping them in a safe place, stocking up on the essentials putting some money aside.

You know if we don't have power for a couple weeks it may be the grocery stores are still open but they can only take cash. If you got camping here you're already on your way to putting together an emergency kit the same things you use camping would go on to an emergency kit I've got my little camp still in a central location along with you know the sleeping bags and the tense and the extra food and the you know.

The dehydrated food that you might get a camping store arm the extra flashlights extra clothes are all of the essentials that you might need a water filter instead of trying to put gallons and gallons a waterway you can go basically two any body of water stick your water filter into it and you have gallons and gallons of water anytime you need it. Are maybe collapsible water jugs that's not a bad idea of the

Worldwide Wednesday Wrap-Up

Welcome to the Worldwide Wednesday Wrap-Up, in which we consolidate the international Red Cross and Red Crescent news into one list of bite-sized links for you. It's a non-comprehensive sampling of the larger and/or more intriguing aspects of our global work...

Côte d'Ivoire: The humanitarian situation in Côte d'Ivoire is worsening as fighting and looting continue. An ICRC-chartered aircraft has landed with nearly 12 tons of supplies to meet the most urgent needs of people affected by the conflict.

LIBYA: As a result of the recent and ongoing fighting in Libya, unexploded munitions pose major risk for civilians. The ICRC is preparing to send staff to provide support for the destruction of such items and to launch a mine risk education campaign.

CHAD: The IFRC and Chadian Red Cross are strengthening programs in areas hit by meningitis, measles and cholera.

Across the Middle East and North Africa: As unrest and violence continue to spread, one of the ICRC's top priorities is to support local health staff in saving lives and ensuring that people in need of emergency medical care – in particular, those wounded in the violence – receive help.
