Today is the 90th anniversary of the founding of the League of Red Cross Societies (later renamed the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies).
Personally, I think "league" sounded cooler than "federation." The word brings up images of cape-wearing do-gooders fighting to save the world.
Actually, aside from the capes, that's a pretty accurate description. The IFRC is made up of 186 Member Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (including the American Red Cross), who join forces (sounds pretty "league-ish" to me!) to support relief operations worldwide.
You read about these global efforts each week in the Worldwide Wednesday Wrap-Up. But now you can take actually take action.
In honor of this momentous anniversary, the IFRC has launched the Our World. Your Move. campaign:
Our world faces unprecedented challenges, ranging from conflict and mass displacement to climate change, migration and a global financial crisis. We have a collective responsibility to make our world a better place. It's up to each of us, as individuals, to make a move and do something to help others.
Even better... think global, act local. Take a free International Humanitarian Law course right here in Portland.
